Press Release
Response to the Climate Change Committee report

Commenting on the Climate Change Committee’s report on emission reduction progress in Scotland, released today, Miriam Brett, co-director of non-partisan think tank Future Economy Scotland, said:
“Today’s Climate Change Committee report should act as a rallying cry for action. Scotland's 2030 climate goals are now ‘no longer credible’, and there is no ‘comprehensive strategy’ for Scotland to meet its net zero goals, according to the committee.
“By setting a legally binding target of becoming net zero by 2045, the Scottish Government is demonstrating international climate leadership. But the costs of delaying action far outweigh the costs of immediate action, and the clock is ticking. As the Climate Change Committee report states, now is time to deliver.
“As a matter of urgency, the government must rise to the challenge of implementing a comprehensive roadmap to decarbonise key sectors – particularly transport, agriculture, land use and buildings.
“It is clear that maintaining business-as-usual is not an option, and the time for making minor tweaks to the status quo has long gone.
“While delivering a just transition poses huge challenges, it also presents enormous opportunities, from creating a new generation of well-paid green jobs and raising living standards, to reducing poverty and tackling deep-rooted inequalities. Scotland is well placed to prosper from decarbonisation, but to unlock this incredible potential, hardwiring climate and economic justice into every aspect of Scotland’s economy must be a priority.”
