Responding to the Programme for Government 2025-26, Miriam Brett, Co-Director at Future Economy Scotland, said:
“Predictably, amid a busy legislative programme, this Programme for Government was largely reflective and offered little in the way of new developments. While we welcome measures such as the commitment to the Heat in Buildings Bill and the removal of peak rail fares, elsewhere the programme was simply a repackaging of existing commitments. Focus must now turn to delivering critical legislation, such as the Housing Bill to ensure measures like impactful, well designed rent controls are not watered down.

“As we move into an election period, timidity will not cut it. At a time when the far-right are gaining traction across the UK, we need a policy agenda from all political parties that genuinely transforms people’s lives. Now is the time to be bold.”
