Response to Donald Trump’s North Sea intervention

Responding to Donald Trump’s intervention on North Sea oil and gas, Miriam Brett, Co-Director at Future Economy Scotland, said:
“Donald Trump’s ‘drill baby drill’ agenda runs in direct contradiction to what we know to be true: opening new oil and gas fields is inconsistent with a safe future. Trudging down a path of unsustainable energy would be an insult to future generations.
“The harsh reality is that over the past decade, the number of jobs supported by the oil and gas industry has halved, despite huge support from the government. Continuing down this path would be unsustainable for the climate, unsustainable for jobs, and unsustainable for impacted communities. It is cleaner, safer and, crucially, more affordable to transition to renewable energy - and Scotland is well placed to do so. This can only be achieved with a comprehensive and managed just transition.
“Donald Trump would do well to address the myriad of crises facing the US under his leadership as opposed to wading into the UK's energy dialogue, which he evidently knows very little about.”
