Responding to the Scottish Government's new climate targets, Miriam Brett, Co-Director at Future Economy Scotland, said:
“We welcome the Scottish Government’s intention to adhere to the advice of the Climate Change Committee regarding targets to tackle the climate emergency over the coming decades. However, the key takeaway from the Scottish Government’s decision to drop the 2030 emissions reduction target must be that ambitious rhetoric is meaningless unless it is matched with credible policy implementation.
“As a matter of urgency, the Scottish Government must rise to the challenge, harnessing the potential of devolved powers, and develop credible plans to rapidly decarbonise key sectors - particularly in areas such as buildings, transport and land use. Scotland’s legally binding target to reach net zero by 2045 is still well within reach - but only if bold rhetoric is matched with a comprehensive pathway to delivery.”
