Press Release
Scottish Government must put industrial strategy at heart of Programme for Government

04 September 2023
Commenting ahead of the publication of the Scottish Government's Programme for Government, Future Economy Scotland Co-Director Laurie Macfarlane said:
“The Scottish Government has set out a vision for building a fairer, greener and more inclusive economy, but this cannot be achieved by making minor tweaks to the status quo. This week’s Programme for Government must include a commitment to develop a bold and ambitious green industrial strategy for Scotland.
“Across the world – from Europe to the US – governments are playing a more proactive role in stewarding the economy to overcome 21st century challenges, from tackling the climate emergency to reducing inequality. The Scottish Government should take note.
“The Programme for Government must harness the Scottish Government's ability to mobilise green investment, nurture new industries and transform the labour market. As well as helping to accelerate a just transition to net zero, a bold industrial strategy has the potential to create thousands of well-paid jobs, raise living standards, and tackle deep-rooted inequalities. The time to act is now.”

Over the next two years, Future Economy Scotland will undertake a major research project that aims to develop bold but credible policies to achieve this goal. As the first output in the project, this paper outlines the challenges and opportunities associated with delivering a just transition in Scotland, and sets out the scope of work we will undertake over the next two years.
