Scotland abandons 2030 net zero target: comment from Future Economy Scotland

18 April 2024

Commenting on the Scottish Government’s reported decision to abandon its 2030 net zero target, Laurie Macfarlane, co-director of non-partisan think tank Future Economy Scotland, said:

“The Scottish Government’s decision to abandon its 2030 emissions reduction target is disappointing – but unsurprising. While ministers showed commendable leadership in setting ambitious targets, they have consistently failed to take the decisive action needed to decarbonise key sectors. Today’s announcement must act as a necessary wake up call.

“The lesson here is not that net zero goals are unattainable. It is that ambitious rhetoric is meaningless unless it is matched with credible policy implementation. As a matter of urgency, the Scottish Government must rise to the challenge and develop credible plans to decarbonise key sectors – particularly transport, agriculture, heating and buildings.

“Scotland’s target to reach net zero by 2045 is still well within reach – but only if the Scottish Government starts to match rhetoric with delivery. Achieving it is not only a climate imperative – it is also Scotland’s greatest economic opportunity.

“The time for talking the talk on climate is over. Scotland must start walking the walk.”
